So, last week I wrote that I was feeling zapped of energy, my skin was broken out, and I was feeling generally "clogged" with chips, junk food, Easter chocolate, and way too much coffee.
Dr. Joshi ROCKS!, but I've had to tailor his "cleanse" just a bit, to suit my needs.
I decided I cannot live without coffee. I had no idea that caffeine withdrawal would be so rough. Constant, throbbing headache, so tired and draggin my ass.
I simply cannot put my coffee-loving system through this torture any longer. Call me a wimp, but I seriously cannot walk, talk, or think, until I've had my morning coffee. I literally stumble out of bed in the morning, go directly to my kitchen, (do not pass go, do not collect $200.)get the coffee machine going and by the time I go pee, it's ready to drink. That first sip is better than any drug out there!
After drinking about half of my first cup, the clarity kicks in and I can accomplish my morning pages, my yoga and get my daughter up and ready for school, etc.Of course Dr. Joshi would SO NOT approve, but I don't like my Zombie-self without my coffee. So when I had a cup after 2 whole days without...omg...headache was gone after the 2nd sip...truly! A miracle.
I have though, cut back alot! I no longer make an evening pot after supper. I no longer drink Tim Horton's coffee. I used to drink coffee all day long and have gradually switched over to chai/herbal teas. So I am proud of that progress!
Plus, I'm using honey & soymilk in it, instead of cream & and the demon of white refined sugar!
As for the detox food....it's awesome. I'm eating all my leafy greens, lentils, brown rice, soy milk, etc. but then again, I've always eaten this way. Dr. Joshi
says no fruit (except bananas), and no wheat/gluten products for 21 days.
The objective is to rid the body of toxins and get it back to a more natural alkaline state. Most fruits are only alkaline if picked when ripe. The fruit we buy in stores is picked way too early, so it can be ripe by the time it gets to the stores, therefore it is actually acid-forming and lacking in nutrients. The idea of this cleansing detox is to encourage our body to get it's energy from breaking down our fat stores and thereby releasing the toxins stored within them. Sugars, (even natural fruit sugars) will get in the way of this.
Veggies, however, a different story. You're allowed as many as you want.
Wheat and gluten products make alot of mucus production in your stomach, and slows down the digestion process and makes you feel sluggish. So I've been eating alot of gluten-free muesli (like a granola) with soy milk and it's actually yummy! And spelt bread and rice pasta are good too.
So, it's not like I'm going without food. I'm just eating more whole foods in their natural state and no processed crap.
I'm starting to feel the effects. Already my skin is clearing up, my energy levels are returning, and I just feel better overall. I dry brush my skin before showering, and it feels amazing!
And I'm sure the coffee won't defeat the whole purpose of the detox. (or that chocolate bar I HAD to have...PMS you know!)

Good on you for doing a detox! I couldn't do the no-coffee either. That is said as I sit here sipping my morning brew. You are SO right... that first sip is better than any drug out there. It is just SO good. Mmmmmm.... All of the other things you mention sound very healthy though. I'll be curious to see how it all makes you feel. Hooray for healthy living!
i SO feel your pain! once upon a time, i could *literally* tell time by my caffeine withdrawal symptoms. every hour, on the hour. breakfast was a six pack of pepsi a day (because the bio-parents drank decaf in the morning and i didn't have my own coffee maker), and i spent about 200$ a week on coffee.
then i got pregnant and cut cold turkey. OMG, talk about the worst two weeks of my life. but i'm still caffeine-free! =) seven years later, even. now caffeine *gives* me headaches!
spelt bread is soooo yummy! so's quinoa. my favorite snack is a couple slices of spelt bread with (real, fresh-ground) peanut butter and a glass of soymilk.
huzzah for you! i'm so glad you're flushing yourself out, and feeling so much better. soon you'll wonder how you ever could have lived any other way. ...altho i won't lie and say i don't get a processed food craving every blue moon...
i love your photo :)
it sounds pretty much the way i normally eat though i do like my fruit and i need my morning coffee though otherwise i drink tea :)
sounds like you are doing so well with it!!
can i ask a bit of stoopid question, what is dry brushing, i have heard people mention it all over the place and i have no clue, clueless am i .. is it a special brush, what do you do? hmmmm, maybe i should just do a google search ;-)
hugs!
xox
There are no stoopid questions....only stoopid ex-boyfriends! lol
I use a wooden brush with natural bristles. I bought it at the health food store. About 10 bucks.
I'll post some info. on your blog.
ive never actually done this with food, just with a pill and it didnt work. Anyhow i've heard of dry brushing, how does that work and what do you use? I beleive traditional japanese women do this before bathing?

No coffee?! That's just sick!!! Coffee is one of my great pleasures in this life!
Man, I'm such a bread head ...
My daughter, the vegetarian wonder, wants to go completely natural and blow off all processed foods. When she told me that this morning, I was stunned!
I have such a brush, but it never occured to me to go dry with it! Any special instructions?
GREAT line about no stupid questions! HAHAHAHA!
OMG - did you quit smoking???
I appreciate your candor...
I had to quit caffeine 3 years ago-it was the worst thing I even experienced. I was not only drinking 2 pots a day, but taking a lot of excederin. I missed a week of work and spent 2 days lying on the bathroom floor throwing up. Anyways, you are doing it the smart way- a way that fits your lifestyle.
Sounds like you are starting to delve into the world of the foods I frequent.
Food experimentation is fun!
This post made me laugh out loud! I can't give up coffee either, I love it too much (and love can't be bad, right?) but I now only have one cup in the morning and green/herbal tea the rest of the time. I always feel excellent when I'm off bread and totally veg. So good luck with the rest of the detox. (Don't forget Yoga clears your body of toxins too).
(((the dream)))
Did I quit smoking? Are you kidding? I can't even quit coffee!!!!
Besides, Dr. Joshi doesn't even mention smoking in his book, so I guess it's allowed. lol!
Seriously, I am trying though. I'm always trying. I quit when I was pregnant and the stupid-est thing I ever did was spark one up again when my daughter was 4 days old.
I got dizzy and passed out, right there on the front porch!
When I woke up, I lit another one.
LOSER!!!!
Oh, and....your daughter sounds most definitely cool!
haha, i'm seriously laughing about your comment of passing out while smoking...and then coming to and smoking more!
but i am so proud of you for detoxing and helping others to get the courage to follow in your foot steps. we did a detox about 4 years ago, pretty similar to this one called the candida diet. it was dubbed the dirt and veggies diet by my hubby because he felt like that was all that we ate! no yeast or mold products and NO sugars, natural or not. so we ate a lot of rice, veggies, and even meat. but it was amazing how strong my cravings for rolls were... after eating a HUGE meal all i wanted to do was sink my teeth into a roll.
sorry, i'm probably not helping you stay focused!!! GOOD LUCK GIRLIE!
Hi BM! I've also felt the strong need to start a de-tox today. I am feeling clogged with holiday festivity and it is time to cleanse and get my body and soul back to normal! Thus, it was great timing to come to your blog and read all of this!
Thank you for your lovely comment on my blog. It was so nice to receive it. Yea, for meditation areas!

I need to detox ... it scares the hell out of me. I remember coming off 4 x caramel latte's a day ... whoa the headaches, I became superbitch!
I like the sound of this detox. It's all very healthy food. I've tried to cut back on the coffee (like you, I can't open my eyes without it!) but it's so hard. Maybe switching to that 1/2 reg, 1/2 decaf brand (folgers makes one) in the afternoon would help.
Anyway, good luck on your detox plan. I love that little picture you made, it's too cute.
I did the same thing when I was pregnant - and I gained 70 lbs with both babies. I have a friend who likes tp point out: "Don't quit quitting - one day it will be permanent." I can tell you in all honesty - it won't be today.
Hey - the dry brushing thing IS awesome!!!
LMHO I love the picture. I could not lose caffiene permanently. That's worse than chocolate cake!
the detox sounds awesome. I am anxious to give it a try but saw that it takes weeks to get a copy from England. Is meat allowed on the diet??
